Built With the Tunnel to Towers Foundation
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation builds mortgage-free homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders, and for the families of those who have fallen. In 2021 the Foundation came to Northwest Montana for Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Austin Reese, who deployed to Iraq three times, and for the family who lives there now. We built the house.
A Tunnel to Towers home is built to the Foundation's own accessibility standard, and that standard is the whole job. What it asks for is invisible when it is done well and unusable when it is not.
In this house the cooktop sits on a lowered run with open knee space under it, and the wall oven is set at the same height. The vanities are open underneath. The shower has no curb to cross. The grab bars went where a person actually reaches for them, not where they were easiest to fasten. The entry is level from the drive, and the doors and halls are wide enough to move through without thinking about it. Timber posts on stone at the entry, because a home built for someone should look like it.
